Choose a shape by the outline you enjoy, then test that preference against an individual stone and a considered setting. Emerald and oval are not simply two sizes of the same look. Neither shape name nor carat weight alone tells you what a complete ring will feel like on your hand.
Two different starting points
IGI describes emerald shapes as rectangular with cropped corners and large facets; its oval description highlights an elongated outline. Those broad descriptions are useful orientation, not a ranking of individual stones. See IGI's diamond-shape guide.
At Stellivon, Emerald Solitaire explores a geometric, architectural direction. Oval Silhouette explores continuous curves and an elongated outline. These are design concepts, not side-by-side evidence of available diamonds or guaranteed finished proportions.
Compare using the same questions
- Outline. Do you prefer cropped corners and straight edges, or a continuous curve? Try describing the preference without using a carat number.
- Proportions. Ask for the actual length, width and depth of a proposed stone. Discuss a longer or fuller outline rather than assuming every stone of a shape looks alike.
- Visual evidence. Ask which images or video show the individual stone. A concept illustration can explain a setting direction, but it cannot establish that stone's appearance.
- Ring profile. Discuss setting height, band profile and neighbouring rings. The setting must be reviewed with the chosen stone, not selected only from a front-view image.
- Personal meaning. Decide whether the piece should feel quiet, expressive, ceremonial or simply easy to make your own. The occasion need not be an engagement.
A short brief is enough to begin
For example: “I prefer the Emerald direction, but want to discuss a less elongated outline and how it could sit beside my existing band.” This is an illustrative brief, not a customer quote or an approved specification. It is more useful than asking for the biggest stone within a budget without discussing the complete ring.
What still needs confirmation?
Your preference does not select a live SKU. Actual availability, report status, measurements, compatible structure, metal, size and complete price belong in the individual proposal. If you are torn between the two directions, ask for the specific comparisons you need rather than treating a generic shape chart as the final answer.
